Nurse disappears during malaria drug trial
Parents of Matthew Lloyd make TV appeal after son goes missing while taking part in malaria drug trialThe family of a nurse who vanished while taking part in a clinical trial aimed at finding a vaccine for malaria fear his life could be in danger if he does not seek treatment soon.Matthew Lloyd, 35, who works at Southampton General Hospital, phoned in sick last week and then failed to turn up for an appointment in Oxford connected to the trial. Police said Lloyd needed "urgent medication" that he did not have with him.Lloyd's family today said it was out of character for him to disappear without telling anybody and appealed for help in finding him.In a statement released by police, Lloyd's parents, Doreen and Michael Holland and his sister, Claire Holland, described him as a "responsible, ambitious and focused man".The statement added: "His disappearance is totally out of character. We regularly speak to him on the phone, by text and by email and we knew he was taking part in these clinical trials, he told us about it back in July."He was quite excited about taking part in these trials. He was doing this as a way of getting more experience and a means of furthering his career as a nurse."We were totally shocked to find out that he had not turned up to his appointment in Oxford on 7 October. It is not like him to take on a project and not follow it through."Appealing directly to Lloyd, the family, who are from Somerset, said: "Matthew, if you are out there and you are unwell then please seek medical attention and ring the police or get someone to ring the police and tell us where you are."We all care about you and we just want to know you are ok and we want you back safe and sound."It is thought Lloyd had been involved in trials at Oxford University's Jenner Institute, which has been been working for 10 years to find a vaccine for malaria – though a spokeswoman refused to confirm this because of patient confidentiality.Volunteers taking part in trials at the clinic are given a vaccine and then deliberately infected with a treatable malaria. After a while, whether they show signs of having caught the disease or not they are given treatment. The danger is that if someone is not treated, they are at risk of suffering from malaria, which claims 1 million lives around the world every year.Money was taken out of Lloyd's bank shortly before he disappeared and his family said there was nothing about his behaviour before he vanished to suggest he was unhappy. He is described as white with short brown hair, of medium build with a swarthy complexion. As well as having connections with Oxford for his clinical trials, he is known to have links with Cornwall and the Avon and Somerset area.MalariaSteven Morrisguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds
