Mother of Dartmoor girl tells of regrets
Jennifer Wilkin-Shaw says she would never have let daughter go on trip if she had known group would be unsupervisedThe mother of a schoolgirl swept to her death during a training expedition on Dartmoor said she would never have let her daughter go if she had known the group would be left unsupervised.Charlotte Shaw, 14, drowned when she fell into a flood swollen river in torrential rain and gales on the Devon moor in March 2007.Her mother, Jennifer Wilkin-Shaw, told the jury hearing Charlotte's inquest: "If I had known she was going to be left unsupervised on a day with such foul weather with such limited training, I wouldn't have let her go."I had assumed they would be shadowed from a reasonable distance – particularly as the weather was getting worse and this was their first time on Dartmoor."The nine-strong team from Edgehill College in north Devon was under the management of teacher Chris Fuller as they trained for the army-organised Ten Tors hiking challenge. He and two other adults left the moor to take an injured child to the town of Princetown and had breakfast in a cafe there.Charlotte was the last to try to cross the swollen river but dropped her backpack in the water and instinctively tried to grab it but fell in and was swept away, the inquest in Exeter has heard.Wilkin-Shaw said both she and Charlotte were concerned about the weight of the bag, which she said was heavier than before because Charlotte was carrying a tent for the first time. She described Charlotte as a "very physical all rounder who enjoyed a challenge" but said it took both of them to lift the loaded backpack on to a chair and load it into their car.Wilkin-Shaw wept as she told the inquest: "I was concerned about the weight. When she lifted the rucksack onto her back she said: 'I don't think I'm going to complete the walk'. This surprised me as she was dogged and always completed things."The inquest continues.Steven Morrisguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds guardian.co.uk |
